Scores arrested after Brussels BLM protests turn violent
Brussels is witnessing massive Black Lives Matter protests over the death of a 23-year-old man while he was in police custody. As per reports, more than 100 people were arrested on Wednesday night after peaceful demonstrations turned violent and protesters clashed with the Brussels police. Among those arrested, there were about 30 minors also.
Scores of protestors had gathered in Lists square in central Brussels, seeking justice over the death of the young man. Holding BLM signs and banners, protestors shouted "We want the truth" during the demonstrations.
As the protests turned violent, demonstrators reportedly threw stones and projectiles at the police which led to the forces using tear gas and water cannon to scatter the gathering. A police statement in the matter reported that protesters vandalized police stations and vehicles and damaged street furniture as well. Several police officers and demonstrators suffered injuries during the clashes, the statement added.
Amid these clashes, Belgian King Philippe’s car was also surrounded and targeted by protestors. The King was headed to his royal residence in Laeken from Palais Royal in the center of the city when his car caught in cross-fire. Significantly, there were no reports indicating injuries to King Philippe.
The Brussels prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the "involuntary manslaughter" of the 23-year-old man, identified as Ibrahima B, who died in police custody under unknown circumstances. The Office has also called for the appointment of an investigating judge to probe the unclear circumstances that resulted in the death of the man.
The prosecutor's office has stated that the young man was arrested earlier this month after he tried to escape the police check on a gathering that was suspected of violating COVID-19 restrictions. After being arrested, he was taken to a police station where he lost consciousness and fainted. He was then taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Responding to Wednesday's developments, Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden has assured the public of an investigation into the matter.
"We will follow that up and, if necessary, take the necessary steps to also condemn misconduct by the police," she said as quoted by the Brussels Times.
Several incidents of brutality at the hands of Brussels police have been reported in the past few years, causing alarming concerns over the safety of people. Last year, the death of a 19-year-old man identified as Adil in police custody evoked Black Lives Matter protests in Brussels.
