47 killed in jihadist attack in Burkina Faso
Northern
part of Burkina Faso was attacked by jihadists killing 47 people, including 30
civilians. The president of African country has declared three days of national
mourning. This attack marks latest round of bloodshed in the country facing
high Islamist violence.
The jihadist attack on Wednesday took place near town of Gorgadji, leaving 14 soldiers and three militia volunteers dead, according to the communications ministry.
The president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, declared three days of national mourning from Thursday after the latest attacks. During mourning the national flag is to be flown at half mast from public buildings and all festivities remain banned.
The area of attack lies in the infamous “three-border” zone - Burkina Faso meets Mali and Niger here. This region is focus of jihadist violence that is plaguing west Africa’s wider Sahel region. This was also the third attack on soldiers of Burkina Faso in past two weeks.
