Turkey To Clear Terrorists From Syria For Peace, Says President
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that Turkey is determined to clear terrorist groups, such as the YPG/PKK, namely the Kurdistan Workers' Party, from Syria because terrorists pose the threat to peace in the country and the region.
While speaking at a trilateral summit with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the President said that Turkey expects its Astana partners to support its efforts to establish peace and stability in northern Syria and beyond. He further said, "If there is peace in Idlib now, it is because of the Astana process.” “Iran supports a political solution to the Syrian crisis," he added.
Eliminate terrorism from Syria
Russia, Turkey, and Iran vowed to continue their cooperation to "eliminate terrorists" in Syria at the trilateral summit in Tehran, the capital of Iran. They also issued a trilateral statement on this matter. The three leaders said in a statement that the three countries "reaffirmed the determination to continue their ongoing cooperation to ultimately eliminate terrorist individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities from Syria.” The PKK is listed as a terror organization by several of Turkey’s allies.
The three leaders discussed the humanitarian situation in northern Syria and agreed to coordinate their efforts in establishing stability in this region. They went on to condemn Israeli military attacks in Syria. Moreover, they also agreed to enhance their trilateral economic and political cooperation and to hold the next Astana meeting in Russia.
Earlier, Turkey said that Finland and Sweden have links with terrorist groups, namely the Kurdistan Workers' Party and followers of Fethullah Gulen.
The humanitarian situation in Syria
Syrians are suffering due to an ongoing multi-sided civil war. They are also suffering from the consequences of displacement. The war led to the destruction of the health care system in the country. Many victims were forced to flee to neighboring countries because of the attacks.
