Conflicts in France and Belgium after Morocco's World Cup loss
After Morocco lost in the World Cup semi-finals last night, angry fans turned to violence, sparking clashes in France and Belgium.
France overcame Morocco 2-0 to go to the championship match against Argentina. Morocco supporters used flares and pyrotechnics to wreak havoc on the streets of France after the results, which infuriated them.
One of them was observed trying to flee by pulling the French flag off of a car that had run over another person in Montpellier, southern France.
In order to contain the situation, images also showed police moving closer to the rioters. Twitter users reported that the Moroccan supporters also tossed objects at people who were celebrating France's entry into the finals.
Riot police were also used in Brussels, Belgium's capital, which has a sizable Moroccan-American minority. Following their team's World Cup loss, Moroccan football fans used flares and rockets to express their disappointment.
Security personnel deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd, but clashes also broke out between the supporters and the officers. On Saturday, Morocco will compete against Croatia in the third-place playoff round.
