Two dead, 31 injured in Tunisia train accident: Reports

According to reports, a train accident in Tunisia, a country in North Africa, has killed two individuals and injured 31 others.

A train on the Tunis-Gabes track crashed on Tuesday, killing the driver and his assistant, said Radio Tunisienne, quoting a hospital official.

Tunisia’s railway company, SNCFT (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Tunisiens), said on Wednesday that the train veered off tracks and overturned in Tunisia, causing the tragic incident.

The train on the route connecting Gabes and Tunis derailed shortly after midnight near Msaken, a town in north-eastern Tunisia, close to Sousse.

The national railway of Tunisia, under the direction of the Ministry of Transport, said, "An investigation has been launched to clarify the circumstances and causes of the accident and to determine who was responsible.”

In 2022, at least 72 people were injured when two trains of ‘National Company of Tunisian Railways’ collided in the south of Tunisia's Capital, Tunis. A long-distance train hit another train running on the same rail track near the main station of Barcelona, located in Tunis. Later on, people were transferred to nearby hospitals.

In 2016, at least five people were found dead and over 50 were injured when a train crashed into a public bus in Tunisia.

In 2015, at least 17 people were killed and nearly 70 were injured when a train hit a truck south of Tunis. Tunisia suffered one of its worst railway accidents in 2015. Injured people were taken for treatment to hospitals in El Fahes and Zaghouan. Reportedly, the drivers of the train and the truck were speeding at the time of the collision. The same year, another train accident killed five people and injured 40.

Train crashes are common in Tunisia. Several fatal crashes have occurred in recent years, highlighting a dilapidated rail network in Tunisia.
