Jordanian Activist's Mother Passes Away During UAE Prison Sentence

 

The recent passing of Jordanian activist Ahmed al-Atoum's mother while he serves a 10-year prison sentence in the UAE for Facebook posts has ignited widespread dismay and criticism within the human rights community. Al-Atoum's case has drawn attention to concerns over freedom of expression and the treatment of activists in the region.

Al-Atoum was convicted under the Cybercrimes Law and the Penal Code for actions deemed as undermining political relations with Jordan through his social media activities. His imprisonment has been a focal point for human rights organizations, with four groups, including the Emirates Detainees Advocacy Center, issuing a joint statement demanding his immediate release.
