Ali Bagheri Takes Over as Iran's Acting Foreign Minister
In the wake of a helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Ali Bagheri, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, has been named acting foreign minister.
Bagheri, a 56-year-old veteran diplomat, previously served as deputy to Amir-Abdollahian. Known for his critical stance towards the West, Bagheri is seen as close to Iran's conservative faction and reportedly has ties to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's inner circle.
This appointment comes at a crucial time for Iran's foreign policy. Talks surrounding the Iran nuclear deal remain stalled, with significant disagreements persisting between Iran and the West. Bagheri's role as chief nuclear negotiator may influence his approach as acting foreign minister.
It's important to note that this is a temporary position. Iran's supreme leader will have the final say on a permanent replacement, and elections are expected within the next 50 days.
