From Coastline to Council: Lebanon’s Battle for Justice in the Face of Israeli Aggression

Lebanon is taking a stand on the international stage after a dramatic incident in Batroun, where Israeli forces reportedly abducted a Lebanese civilian, Imad Amhaz. Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge an urgent complaint with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), demanding accountability for what he calls a serious violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty. This unprecedented event has escalated tensions, underscoring Lebanon’s determination to protect its citizens and secure justice.

Israel claims that Amhaz is a high-ranking operative of Hezbollah, yet Lebanese officials insist he is a civilian with no connections to the armed group. Lebanese authorities, alongside UNIFIL, are investigating the abduction, with Prime Minister Mikati pushing for a swift and thorough inquiry. Lebanon’s Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, has been tasked with filing the complaint to the UNSC, framing the incident as a severe infringement of international norms.

The abduction, carried out by a reported force of over 25 Israeli commandos, occurred far north of the Lebanese-Israeli border in a predominantly Christian area. CCTV footage shared by Lebanese media shows armed men forcing Amhaz into a speedboat, stirring public outrage and fears over Lebanon’s national security. This incident marks a significant escalation in Israeli-Lebanese tensions, drawing condemnation from both Lebanese officials and the public.

Hezbollah has labeled the abduction a “Zionist aggression,” though it has not confirmed if Amhaz was one of its members. Lebanon’s response has focused on reinforcing civilian protection and upholding international law, arguing that Israel’s actions risk destabilizing the region. Lebanese Minister of Public Works Ali Hamieh publicly stated that Amhaz was a civilian, challenging Israel’s justification for the raid and reinforcing Lebanon’s demand for an independent investigation.

International observers are closely watching Lebanon’s approach to the UNSC, as the complaint could bring heightened attention to similar incidents in conflict zones. Lebanon’s call for justice underscores a commitment to safeguarding civilians, even amid escalating regional tensions. Mikati’s response signals Lebanon’s resilience in the face of foreign aggression and its readiness to assert its sovereignty on the global stage.
