Somalia's Frontline: The Somali National Army's Struggle Against Al-Shabaab

The activities of Al-Shabaab recently suggest their insurgency is intensifying and threatens both Somalia’s safety and the security of the region.

Attacking enemies and capturing their territory

In the first half of 2025, Al-Shabaab organized many assaults across the heart of Somalia. It is important to mention that the group managed to take control of the town of Adan Yabaal in April which was previously where most government activities occurred. Al-Shabaab plans to trap Mogadishu and show that the federal government has little control with these attacks.

Targeted Killing of Enemies and Attacks on People

Besides seeking to control more land, Al-Shabaab has increased attacks and assassinations against people. A month after leaving Washington, the group set off a roadside bomb as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud drove in Villa Somalia, but did not succeed. Although President Ford was not killed, 10 people were killed and 20 others were hurt as a result of the attack. Such behavior is intended to scare people and to interfere with how a country is run.

Changes for Regional Security

The return of Al-Shabaab is significant for security in the whole region. Because they have influence in both southern and central Somalia, they have the ability to wage attacks in other locations. Besides, what they do has led to piracy becoming a bigger concern in the Indian Ocean, with 45 incidents reported after a period when activity was low.The Somali National Army stands as a bulwark against extremism, striving to restore peace in a nation long plagued by conflict.Their determination, coupled with international support, is crucial in the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab.
