Greece approves wall extension of 26km alongside Turkey’s border
The plan to extend a wall with its bordering country Turkey, the government of Greece has confirmed the proposal and said that this is being done to stop the migrants from staging mass crossing into the European Union territory.
The government of Greece had earlier complained regarding the increasing number of people trying to enter through the northwest border in an attempt to get into the territory of the European nation.
At present, there is a 10km border in existence, and in the coming days a wall as long as 26km will be built. This will be a section in a 63-million-euro (USD 74 million) project due to be completed by the end of April. There were considerable tensions earlier this year when Greece took a stance saying that it will not be stopping migrants to pass into Europe.
Turkey and Greece are already engaged in conflict over energy rights in the disputed territories of the East Mediterranean region where Turkey has time and again broken the deal and despite various attempts of the European Union, has continued to sents its ships to the sea searching for energy resources.
As per a report in the Associated Press, Four Greek construction companies have been selected to build the new wall and also upgrade the fencing installed in the walls to ensure a safer region.
Ankara is yet to react to the wall construction and how it will affect the Turkish population. But apart from that, Turkey has a lot of things to worry about. Due to its relentless efforts of capturing the East Mediterranean region, Greece and Cyprus are trying to increase the pressure on the EU so that it takes a stricter call on Turkey’s actions and not just speak empty words.
Other than this, Turkey has come under severe scrutiny for trying to meddle in between Azerbaijan and Armenia and siding with the former. This has resulted in people taking to streets with a call asking “Turkey out of Armenia”. More than 300 people were on the streets on Monday demanding Turkey to stop supporting Azerbaijan.
