How will US-China relations shape with Biden taking the call?
China and the United States are extreme ends and much of the credit goes to the Trump administration for its strict and solid approach towards the Asian country but with the incoming of President-elect Joe Biden, it is difficult to predict the path here on.
The American elections gained worldwide attention but it is very rare to see the level of popularity these US elections got because either people wanted a power shift or are praying for Trump to continue his term, which is not possible now. But this happened because whatever happens in the American elections, effectively decides the relations and strategies all around the world.
There is a lot happening in the past four years with Trump making some remarkable changes in the word spectrum. But what he also did was having a no-tolerance policy towards China, the other largest economy. That has changed a lot because if the US leads the way for the west, China does the same for Asia, with or without the support of the Asian countries.
He not only withdrew from the Paris agreement but also backed out of the World Health Organisation(WHO) while in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. But the two countries, who are each other's biggest trading partners have been very vocal about dislike for each other's leaders.
The situation of a trade war rose due to either of the countries not backing from their stance be it China’s continuous attempts to capture land or America’s efforts in disturbing China’s economy. Both have been equally guilty for hurting each other. But now that one's leadership is changing, will it decrease the intensity of attitude or Biden will remain hostile towards China?
During his rallies and campaigns, Biden has promised to make efforts to stabilize the relations with China, which kind of gave away that he will be softer on China. But that is not it. The cabinet he chooses will also partially determine where China stands on the US priority list.
The position of the secretary of state will be a key factor in it. There are chances for Antony Blinken to replace Mike Pompeo for the post and if it were to happen, then it will be bad for China or the relations between the two countries.
This is because of the viewpoint Blinken brings to the table. In August the probable candidate for the top diplomatic post said that for both the US and India, China is a challenge and New Delhi will have to stake the stance against it with great strength.
He further alleged that Trump indirectly strengthened the position of China on a global level by spoiling its relations with world leaders and leaving a void for China to enter. Due to this China could claim Hong Kong and crush democratic American values.
This mindset is enough to reveal that relations between the two mega powers will hardly see any progress even with Biden in power.
These words spoken by the former deputy national security advisor made it clear that he or the Biden administration is not thinking of showing any leniency to China. This is a prime example of how diplomacy works. Common enemies form the best friends and the Biden administration has a lot of experience playing those cards coming from former President Barack Obama’s family.
