Iran approaches Russia to lead the way to solve conflict between Azerbaijan-Armenia
Iran has supposedly approached Russia to meddle in between Azerbaijan and Armenia who are at a state of conflict in the disputed region Nagorno-Karabakh as the tense situation reached the sixth week and is not ending even after three ceasefires.
Russian foreign minister confirmed while talking to a foreign media that Iran’s deputy foreign minister Abbas Abaqchi visited Moscow and asked Russia’s involvement in the matter. He refrained from revealing details but said that they are looking into the matter carefully.
A fight that broke out on September 27 this year has killed over 1,000 people and not only that but reports have suggested that there are more people killed in this conflict contrary to what has been reported in the data. Nagorno-Karabakh is a conflicted territory internationally recognized to be part of Azerbaijan but is occupied by Armenian people.
This is the worst fight between the two regions in 25 years and experts say that it has been escalated after Turkey’s involvement in the matter as Azerbaijan is the ally of Turkey. Iran is asking for Moscow’s support as Armenia is an ally of Russia and Azerbaijan was once controlled by the Russian state under the Soviet Union.
In any case of conflict between the countries, traditionally the United States, Russia, and France are chosen to negotiate talks. They are usually considered to have a neutral outlook at these conflict situations and also because they share their roles in a panel known as the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), a security and rights watchdog.
As reported by Reuters, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would continue working with Turkey to stop the military confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh from escalating. He also said that around 2,000 mercenaries from the Middle East, which are also called ‘external players’, have been made to fight in the war.
The situation is still tensed in the area as the border stand-off between the two continues. On this, Azerbaijan’s prosecutor general said, “Our military was not even able to put a flag on anything there, because there were no buildings. In Zangilan, they had found only a school for the children of military servicemen.”
Till now, from September 27, there have been 5000 casualties from both sides.
