How the Covid-19 pandemic will shape America’s politics?

One of the biggest reasons for the victory of the Democrat leader Joe Biden in the recently held United States election was due to the poor handling of the Coronavirus pandemic by the incumbent president Donald Trump. One may argue that it was not the only issue but several surveys reveal that it was the largest contributing factor for such a strong shift.

There are two extreme ways how Joe Biden along with other democrats dealt with the coronavirus pandemic and focused his campaigns on spreading awareness for the same. The opposition leaders were found to have been appealing to people to wear masks whereas the Republicans and especially Donald Trump neglected the concerns.

Throughout the campaigns, he never stressed social distancing or other such Covid-9 norms which became a cause of concern among the experts and the people. The Trump administration was more focused on blaming the Chinese for not handling the situation more efficiently and spreading it all around the world. He often referred to coronavirus as the ‘China virus’.

People who support Biden and those who still support Trump are poles apart but both of them are present in large numbers and have a lot of power to change the dynamics. It will be interesting to see how the politics within the nation and outside the nation changes with Biden in control of such things especially given the fact that the democrat leader has openly supported science and expressed empathy towards the American population, which is very different from the rational point of view of Trump.

Experts believe that Trump had divided the American population and targeted the humanitarian aspects of the society such as race, ethnicity, education, religion, and national origin. He had openly made racial comments and targeted a particular religion for potentially everything. Biden on the other hand has given a glimpse of progressive thinking through the variation he brought in the selection of top officials.

The president-elect has already asked for a 13-member team to come up with an action plan to tackle the coronavirus spread in the country. Now be it directly or indirectly, it will definitely make a huge impact on the international platform, and all those countries who have been neglecting the virus just like Trump, they will be forced to follow Biden’s footsteps.

Biden has also promised that he will give time to the country to heal from the damages that the Trump administration did. If we focus on foreign relations too, he is likely to reduce the sour nature of relations between the US-China, US-Iran, and other countries and restore formal talks with them.

During Trump’s term, the US’ relationship with its allies suffered a lot and as the democrat leadership goes, same as Barack Obama, Biden too will look to restore those ties and one of the first steps will be to rejoin WHO, which Trump left because he felt that the health organization was being partial towards China.
