Elton John Quits Twitter Over A Change In "Misinformation" Policy, Elon Musk Responds
Elton John, the British veteran singer, and musician quit Twitter citing a change in "misinformation" policy as the reason. He shared the news on his Twitter account.
Before quitting the social media platform, he wrote on Twitter, "All my life I've tried to use music to bring people together. Yet, it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world. I've decided to no longer use Twitter.”
He said that the change in Twitter’s policy would allow misinformation to flourish unchecked on the micro-blogging site. Twitter's new CEO Elon Musk responded to John’s tweet. Musk replied to him, "I love your music. Hope you come back. Is there any misinformation in particular that you're concerned about?"
Twitter announced around two weeks ago that it stopped enforcing a policy to combat misinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic on the micro-blogging site. According to the official website of Twitter, it stopped enforcing its policy on misleading information about Covid-19 on Twitter on 23 November.
In recent months, Twitter continues to remain at the center of a number of controversies because of various reasons. Recently, a legal case was filed against Twitter in the wake of its recent massive layoffs of staff.
A case was filed in San Francisco federal court against Twitter for allegedly firing 57 percent of the female employees in comparison to 47 percent of the male employees. The female employees accused Twitter of breaching California laws banning sex discrimination in the workplace.
Musk was also in the limelight after Kanye West’s account was suspended on Twitter. West’s account was suspended from Twitter for allegedly breaching rules. Subsequently, Kanye West took a dig at Musk, calling him "half-Chinese.”
Since Musk took over the platform, many other celebrities have also quit Twitter. Earlier, Jim Carrey, Shonda Rhimes, David Simon, Jamela Jamil, Trent Reznor, Gigi Hadid, and Toni Braxton quit Twitter.
