MAG received $6 million for activities in Syria
The US government has granted MAG a grant of $6 million to carry out landmine removal operations and provide risk education in Syria.
The financing has been given by the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement of the U.S. State Department, which is the greatest financial backer of humanitarian demining in the entire globe.
The largest mine action operator for humanitarian purposes in the region, MAG has been operating in northeast Syria since 2016. More than 40 million square meters of land have been liberated throughout the region, more than 78,000 explosive ordnance objects have been removed, and more than 600,000 individuals have received risk education lessons from MAG.
With the new grant, MAG will be able to carry out activities in Syria to clear an additional 3.6 million square meters of land and educate an additional 34,000 people who face injury risks.
Also, with the help of the funds, MAG will be able to teach community focal points how to spot suspicious items and report them. The role of community focal points in spreading safety messages inside their communities is crucial.
Teams that are already trained and prepared will be sent to operations in northeast Syria.
Approximately 2 million internally displaced people are anticipated to be living in last-resort locations as of 2022, with many of them choosing not to return to their homes due to catastrophic damage and a fear of explosive ordnance.
Since the full extent of contaminated land is unknown, support for additional survey and clearance actions is essential to better comprehend the scope of the issue and identify the areas where mine action can benefit populations affected by armed conflict.
The previous 12 years of conflict in Syria have had a disastrous effect on regular people, according to Najat El Hamri, regional director for MAG in the Middle East. Today, more than 90% of Syrians are considered to be below the poverty level. For families whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and for the restoration of buildings and houses damaged by the fighting, clearing contaminated land is crucial.
