Wagner fighters leave Russia's southern Voronezh region

The fighters from the Wagner Private Military Company, a Russian paramilitary organization, left the Voronezh region of Southern Russia on Sunday.

On Saturday, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the Wagner group, agreed to leave Russia for Belarus. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko brokered the deal to allow the troops withdrawal from Russia. Reportedly, Yevgeny Prigozhin agreed for the removal of troops from Russia in order to avoid bloodshed in the country. The Wagner chief said that he did not want to "spill Russian blood."

On Sunday, the Wagner pulled fighters from the Voronezh region. The group also pulled fighters from Rostov-on-Don, a city in Southern Russia.

Alexander Gusev, the governor of Voronezh, said that the Wagner fighters left Russia's southern Voronezh region on Sunday. He reportedly said, “The movement of Wagner units through the Voronezh region is ending.”

Train and bus stations in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, where the Wagner group seized an army headquarters, also reopened, and traffic restrictions were lifted on Sunday, according to officials.

The mercenary group Wagner left Russia a day after threatening to overthrow the government. On Saturday, the group seized control of a key military base in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner organization, violently escalated his conflict with the Russian army by seizing the army headquarters on Saturday.

The Russian government said that the leader of the Wagner mercenary group will travel to Belarus and not be held accountable or face any legal charges.

The fight became intense on Saturday after the Wagner commander declared his intention to throw the government, alleging that the Russian military leadership had killed a "huge amount" of his mercenary soldiers during an attack on a camp.

RIA state news agency said on Sunday that the situation was in control after Yevgeny Prigozhin and his mercenaries left Russia's Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don.
