Yair Lapid: Nuclear deal between Iran and the US a 'colossal failure' for Israel
Yair Lapid, the Leader of the Opposition in Israel, has criticized the Israeli government for what he called the "colossal failure" of permitting an anticipated unwritten nuclear agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States.
According to the details of the accord, which were partially covered by American media on Thursday, the Islamic Republic would restrict its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
The "small" agreement, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it on Wednesday, comes a year after failed negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and world powers in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
Yair Lapid said on Twitter, “Despite attempts to call it by other names, the agreement set to be signed between Iran and the US is a nuclear treaty. This is precisely the agreement that the previous government managed to prevent. If it is signed now, it will be a colossal failure by the government.”
Yair Lapid alleged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lost the ability to influence the agreement because he is busy with proposed judicial reform.
Later on, the Knesset's ruling faction said, "Lapid is the last man who can preach morals to the prime minister.”
Earlier, Lapid also said that Netanyahu tried to block the formation of the judicial body. The government also failed to appoint the second candidate to the Judicial Selection Committee.
On Wednesday, a proposed government plan for judicial reform in Israel was rejected by opposition leaders. The opposition also accused Netanyahu of blocking the formation of a key judicial body.
Benny Gantz said that Netanyahu attempted to impact an important vote to appoint lawmakers to Israel’s Judicial Selection Committee, which is made up of the Minister of Justice and eight other members.
