"Elon Musk Criticizes US Immigration Policy, Sheds Light on Mother's Citizenship Struggles
Renowned billionaire Elon Musk recently took to social media to express his concerns about the economic consequences of illegal immigration, adding his voice to the ongoing discussions surrounding the Joe Biden administration's approach to what some perceive as a border crisis.
In a series of posts on X, Musk highlighted several services and benefits that he believes are accessible to illegal immigrants in the United States, underscoring their alleged impact on the housing affordability crisis.
"Here are a few things you might not know: undocumented individuals in America can obtain bank loans, mortgages, insurance, driver's licenses, free healthcare (in California & New York), and in-state college tuition. What's the point of being a citizen if an undocumented person receives all the benefits without paying taxes or participating in jury duty?" he stated.
"If you're wondering why housing is so expensive, this is a significant contributor," Musk added.
As housing prices hit record highs in November and mortgage rates approach two-decade highs due to the Federal Reserve's efforts against inflation, the US real estate market faces challenges, according to a Fox News report. Homebuyers are grappling with difficulties, and renters are burdened with increased financial strain, the report notes.
Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies revealed that in 2022, an unprecedented 22.4 million American renters were considered "cost burdened" by their monthly housing payments. Renters are labeled as "burdened" if they spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent and utilities, representing approximately half of all US tenants.
Born and raised in South Africa, Musk moved to Canada at 18 before becoming a US citizen. "I'm not against immigration; I'm just opposed to a large number of unvetted people flooding into America, which any rational person should be," he clarified.
In a separate post, Musk's mother, Maye Musk, 75, shared her struggles in obtaining US citizenship, revealing that the process took 12 years. "I couldn't obtain US citizenship even though my father and grandmother were born in Minnesota, and my grandfather, John Elon Haldeman, was born in Illinois. I was born in Canada, so it took me 12 years through visas, a green card, a lawyer, and numerous medical tests. That's how challenging it is," her post detailed.
In response, Musk commented, "Yes, it was extremely difficult and took over a decade for me to get US citizenship."
On another front, US Senators recently proposed a $20.2 billion legislation for border security and immigration policy changes, which has been agreed upon by both Democratic and Republican negotiators. The proposed law would grant President Joe Biden the authority to reject asylum seekers if illegal border crossings surpass 5,000 per week, as reported by the news agency AFP."
