UN ends repatriation from Iraq to Kuwait over 1990 invasion

Iraq has welcomed the UN resolution to end repatriation from its territory to Kuwait over the 1990 invasion.

On Wednesday, the nation obliged the UN security council’s resolution and hoped for a better international and regional relation build-up.

"We close a terrible chapter in the absurd war of the tyrannical regime (of Saddam Hussein), which our people and the entire region paid the price for," said the Iraqi President Barham Salih.

He made the official declaration on his Twitter page. The leader also added that with this declaration, Iraq is swiftly moving towards enhancing its foreign policy and improving the already established relationship with its neighbors.

The leader further stressed maintaining stability and peace in the region to serve the best interest of all. Post the official UN announcement, the mission of the organization in Iraq also welcomed the decision calling it a historic milestone for the citizens of Iraq

The Iraqi leader emphasized the UN security council agreeing on the decision having voted unanimously by approving termination of the mandate of the UN compensation commission.

The UN ended a program that lasted for nearly three decades under which Kuwait got to recover 52.4 billion U.S. dollars from Iraq for the damage caused by Iraq in 1990.

That year, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein directed his army to annex Kuwait, Iraq’s neighboring country. The armed forces were pushed back by US intervention after seven months but that duration was enough to destroy most of the country.
