Amber Heard wants a new defamation trial after losing against Johnny Depp

American actress Amber Heard has filed for a new defamation trial against her ex-husband Johnny Depp. This comes months after Depp won his defamation case against his ex-wife.

Heard’s legal team has reportedly filed a new 68-page appeal against Depp. The legal team asked for the jury’s June verdict to be reversed.

In June this year, Depp won his defamation case against Heard, with a jury awarding him $15m in damages. The jury also awarded Heard $2m for one part of her own counterclaim against her ex-husband.

Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation over a 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post wherein she described herself as a victim of domestic abuse. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor was not named in the op-ed. However, Depp’s lawyers argued that the article implied that he was a domestic abuser.

Depp alleged that the article damaged his reputation and he lost many Hollywood films. Later on, Heard’s team filed a new appeal against Depp. She countersued him for $100 million in 2021.

This year, Depp won the defamation trial. However, Heard’s legal team has repeatedly requested the court for a new trial. They demanded the dismissal of Depp’s claims.

Last month, Depp also filed his appeal of the $2 million verdict ruling in favor of Heard’s countersuit. Reportedly, Depp does not want to pay Heard the $2 million that a Virginia jury awarded her in a countersuit claim.

In October, Elaine Bredehoft, who was Heard’s lawyer at the defamation trial held at Fairfax County, said that Heard did not pay her amount. Bredehoft also said that the actress would be unable to pay any money to Depp.

Heard’s insurance company, New York Marine and General Insurance Co, also filed a lawsuit asking to not be held accountable to cover Heard’s legal fees.
