GCC nations advocate adherence to international law in order to address the Ukraine situation

Ahead of the anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council have called for adherence to international law's and the UN Charter's tenets, particularly the principles of a state's sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in that state's internal affairs, and respect for good neighborliness.

According to Mohamed Al-Hassan, Oman's permanent representative to the UN, the GCC countries, which consist of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman, are concerned about the developments in Ukraine, particularly the humanitarian crisis "in light of the increase in the number of refugees and displaced people, the loss of civilian lives, particularly women and children, as well as the damage inflicted on infrastructure."

He spoke on behalf of the GCC in a special UN General Assembly session held to mark the beginning of the war. A resolution highlighting "the need to achieve, as soon as feasible, a comprehensive, just and durable peace" is up for voting among member states.

The EU-drafted resolution demands that Russia withdraw its soldiers from Ukraine and asks for an end to hostilities. After a series of remarks by delegates from more than 80 countries on Thursday, voting is most likely to take place.

Al-Hassan drew attention to UN Charter Article 2, which mandates that member states shall resolve their differences amicably and abstain from using or threatening to use force in interstate affairs.

The GCC countries emphasize that resorting to communication and talks as well as resolving disputes and differences through peaceful and diplomatic ways is the solution to problems and disagreements, according to Al-Hassan.

The Omani envoy stated that all parties had friendly relations with the GCC member nations.

We support efforts on a global and regional level to end this conflict in accordance with international law and in accordance with the values of the UN and its charter.
