United States announces Al-Qaeda as global terrorist in Brazil
Al-Qaeda is mostly known to be active in the middle east but in reality, the terrorist group is active in a lot of other countries, and in recent years it has specifically shown inclination towards American countries like Brazil.
The United States Department of the Treasury designated members of a Brazil-based network of the Treasury designated members along with their companies for staying on the field as support to the terrorist organization and providing them with some support.
The US state department asserted, “Al-Qaeda and its regional affiliates continue to pose a threat to countries around the world (and) the United States is taking action today to stem the funding of this terrorist group.”
The statement also added that it is extremely specific to what they have been ordered by the designated members of the Brazil-based network of the group. Hence, all of these factors led the United States to designate the group as Global Terrorists.
The first member to be designated as a threat by the US was Haytham Ahmad Shukri Ahmad Al-Maghrib. He is the same person who was the initial member of an Al-Qaeda support network in Brazil.
Another member Mohamed Sherif Mohamed Award had also reportedly received bank transfers from many of the other members of the group but it was mostly from the likes of Ahmad Al-Khatib and Award and Al-Khatib’s companies.
The United States stressed that it wants to disrupt all the financial support that Al-Qaeda has been receiving as it in no way wants to promote terrorism in any of the regions.
